Bye, bye York!

Tomorrow we head back home. Bye, bye, York. Almost.

On the way over this past Thursday, it wasn’t till we were just under an hour away from York, that the connection occurred to me. While not directly with York, it was with Yorkshire, East Yorkshire to be precise.

I opened Maps and scoped out the places. The Humber river, the bridge that’s now built over it, the city of Hull, the village called Hessle, all the places I tread upon almost 48 years ago. My first time in England. It was in December, and it was a bitter winter. I arrived at Gatwick, the last flight to land, before all incoming flights were diverted and/or canceled. From London my destination was the port of Hull. We stayed there for about six weeks. That however, is another story, for another day.

We had now decided on this short visit to York, in our ongoing quest to visit the old and the new. Places, that is. Summer is the time to get out and about. Earlier this year, we did Boston. Yes, the old or rather the original Boston in the UK. Now, York was in honor of New York. That was the main reason to visit, more like take a break and check another ‘Place.’ York however surprised us in most unexpected ways.

I think it’s just become one of those places we will come back to soon. Just as we’ve adopted the Isle of Wight, and it calls to us with a compulsion that we submit to. The second visit to York will likely be  longer. It’s a very vibrant city with loads of history, and serious history abounds at almost every turn. Just like in Rome, there is the wall here, and yes, it is Roman. The wall is in pretty good shape in large sections of it, and we walked it both yesterday and today, on our walking tour. There are a lot of old buildings, including houses and churches at every turn. Centuries old.

Every trip teaches me a little more about myself. Travel also reinforces the fact, that we are all the same deep down. More alike than we are different. Those are the people we’ll come back to see. And ofcourse the city! Till next time, Adieu, York. Just one more sleep on your soil, till we see your sights again.
